Our Curriculum Promise
At Linthorpe Community Primary School, our Curriculum Promise is a guarantee of a high quality, rigorous and creative curriculum where the needs of your child are at the centre. Our National Curriculum+ offer promotes high standards and excellence in all areas. In addition to academic and creative subjects, we promote independence, questioning, life skills and a desire to learn in a fun, caring and mutually supportive environment. We provide the Programmes of Study outlined in the 2014 National Curriculum, details of which can be found at
in addition to skills and learning opportunities over and above this. We call this National Curriculum + to reflect the extent to which the LCPS curriculum goes above and beyond the statutory requirements.
Our Aims
Our Curriculum has been created around 3 key aims:
  • Breadth of study - a range of studies across the whole of the National Curriculum, giving children a wide and varied general knowledge as well as high academic performance in the core areas of maths and English.
  • Depth of study - conceptual knowledge and understanding developed in key disciplines; being able to think like a scientist, a geographer or a historian.
  • Cultural Capital - a sound knowledge and understanding of key people and places around the world, and celebrated works by some of our most significant artists.
These 3 broad aims ensure children can build a secure understanding of the world around them and are also able to transfer this and to remember key information; knowledge is 'sticky' - the more we can connect the learning together, the more likely they will remember this throughout their lifelong learning journey. Children's confidence, through more experience in key concepts, is built on year on year. We work on the principle that our brains can never be full! The more rich vocabulary and knowledge and understanding of the world children are exposed to and taught, the more successful our learners will be.
Our Approach 
Children at Linthorpe learn through an Imaginative Learning Project (ILP). Each ILP has a topic theme and a subject-specific approach. Most learning takes place within the context of the Imaginative Learning Project and many of the children's writing tasks are linked to this. There are many opportunities for History, Geography, Science, Art & Design, Design Technology, Music and Computing.
Some subjects, or elements of subjects, need to be taught separately if they do not naturally fit into an ILP. These include: Mathematics, P.E., R.E. and S.M.S.C. Grammar, Punctuation, Spelling and Phonics. 
At Linthorpe, we believe that knowledge is the essential foundation needed for learning, and for skills to be built upon. We want children to have a powerful memory, as well as making MAGICAL memories. Each Imaginative Learning Project has a set of 'Knowledge Organisers'. These organisers contain the basic knowledge that we ensure the children will acquire over the course of the topic. The children are taught using these organisers and are also assessed against them.
To ensure that the children retain this knowledge, they are involved in a memory cycle. We regularly quiz the children about what they learned the day before, the week before, what they learned during the last topic and what they learned in the previous year group.
Our curriculum is designed so that the National Curriculum objectives are regularly re-visited during a child's Linthorpe journey, in order to broaden and deepen knowledge.
Here is an example of how key concepts are revisited and built upon over time at LCPS, in this instance with the focus on fieldwork in Geography.

At the end of each topic, the children will complete a quiz based on their new learning. The quizzes are repeated every half-term to ensure children are retaining previous knowledge.
Vocabulary is infused throughout the whole of our curriculum leading to our pupils' greater understanding of the world around them. We have a strong aspiration to close the vocabulary gap, often seen in the learners with a range of needs so that these children can have greater success as adults and therefore better mental health.
We deliberately teach phonics, spelling, sight vocabulary, academic and subject specific vocabulary, as well as the figurative language that makes English such a challenge to learn! This is planned into our curriculum and part of our pedagogical approaches through red and orange words, read Write Inc, Word of the Week, LiLAC and Knowledge Organisers.
Learning Opportunities
Our Nursery and Reception pupils in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) take part in a variety of interest based learning projects. Each child from Year 1 to Year 6 will take part in a maximum of six Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) per year. Each Project incorporates several curriculum subjects but does have one subject as a main focus. Each ILP is cross-referenced with the National Curriculum Programmes of Study in order to ensure a broad curriculum.
We are very fortunate to have a rich variety of learning resources on our doorstep and make regular use of Linthorpe Cemetery and Nature Reserve, Dorman Museum, Albert Park and the conservation are of Linthorpe Village, which are all within walking distance from our school.
