PE and School Sports at Linthorpe

‘We can only achieve our goals when our bodies and minds are healthy and strong’

How do we approach PE at Linthorpe?

As a statutory requirement of the National Curriculum and an essential contributor to the development of the whole child. Through a high quality PE programme pupils develop physical competence and confidence and are given opportunities to be physically educated and become physically literate. Through a combination of entitlement and choice of activity, the PE provision will contribute to the personal development, health and well-being, enjoyment, success and achievement of all pupils across the whole curriculum and beyond.

PE provides pupils with the opportunity to be creative, competitive and face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams. It promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy and active lifestyle. Pupils learn how to think in different ways and make decisions in response to creative, competitive and challenging activities. They learn how to reflect on their performance, plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve the quality of their work.

PE helps pupils develop personally and socially. They work as individuals, in groups and teams, developing concepts of fairness and of personal and social responsibility. They take on different roles and responsibilities, including leadership, officiating and coaching. Through high quality PE pupils discover their aptitudes, abilities and preferences and make informed choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity.

Our PE Curriculum follows the National Curriculum Programmes of study and is delivered through the “GETSET4PE” scheme of work.  This is a whole school sport and fitness programme, which develops pupils’ fundamental movement skills assessing their progress and fitness from Early Years to the end of Key stage 2.

An extensive programme of extra-curricular school sport and activities complements our PE curriculum. This includes opportunities to compete at both intra and inter school level. The children enjoy the choice of a range of traditional activities including football and hockey as well as new, alternative sporting activities including Boogie Bounce and dance fitness.

Through our school council, children are given a choice of sport clubs they would like after school. All school sport, including after school clubs, are supported by our dedicated School Sport Organisers (SSOs).

Pupils also get the opportunity to go on sports themed trips and be a part of a range of sport related experiences and once in a life time opportunities such as visits to Wembley Stadium.

Partnerships

We are part of the Youth Sports Trust (YST), Middlesbrough Schools Sports Partnership and Acklam Sports Partnership. Membership of these means we take part in many festivals and competitions throughout the year at all stages of primary education.  They enable pupils to showcase their skills and further develops their confidence.

School Games Mark
We have been awarded the Gold School Games Mark for 2022/23. We were also awarded Gold for the academic year 2018/19 but due to COVID, applications were suspended for two years. These awards recognise and celebrate the quality of school sport provided at Linthorpe Community Primary School. Click on the link to view Linthorpe’s page on the School Games website. School Games has important information regarding competitions and events in the area, as well as reports and blogs regarding the school’s achievements and successes.
Due to the COVID pandemic, our Gold School Games Mark was carried forward and will be reassessed at the end of the current academic year.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development
