Spatial Reasoning
At LCPS we aim to develop our pupils’ spatial reasoning confidence.
Spatial reasoning is the ability to understand, visualise and think about the position, shape, size and movement of objects and how they relate to one another.
We develop spatial reasoning by giving children meaningful practical and visual experiences, allowing them to explore, manipulate and represent objects, shapes and patterns in different ways. Alongside this, children are given regular opportunities to talk about their thinking, explaining what they notice, the choices they make and why their ideas work.
By encouraging pupils to verbally reason about their actions and respond to questions such as “What do you notice?”, “How do you know?” and “Can you see it in a different way?”, we help them make connections between what they can see, do and explain, building confident and flexible mathematical thinkers.
